It’s Empathy Day today.
Call me totally biased, but I marvel at how words and pictures have that potential to break us out of our bubbles, our inward looking selves...
A book introduces us to situations and circumstances (bubbles) we may never find ourselves in, but now we know. If we know, we act, or at very least, we appreciate all we have.
In a book, we find characters to love or hate. We laugh, often at them; and we cry for them. Books engage our dreaming muscles, and can bring a check of caution. They broaden our intellect, they enlarge and connect our hearts.
I know books are empathy powerhouses.
They wide-angle lenses through which, we can see further than our own front door, our own wants and needs. Words and pictures break bubbles.
To authors, artists and publishers, let’s keep on, this is important culture-shifting work.
To readers, Thank you.
